Indian Macassar Ebony

Indian Macassar Ebony

When working with Macassar Ebony, it has a moderate, slightly disagreeable odour. Other tiny specialty products include veneer, high-end woodwork, billiard cues, musical instruments, and other small specialty things.

Heartwood resembles Zebrawood in its striking striped pattern. Body colour varies from yellow to reddish-brown, with deeper brown or black stripes. Sapwood is light yellow and is well delineated.

Although not classified in the CITES Appendices, this wood species is on the IUCN Red List. It has been designated as vulnerable due to a population drop of more than 20% in the last three generations, owing to a decline in its native range and exploitation.

Janka Hardness:

3,220 lbf

Average Dried Weight:

70 lbs/ft3 (1,120 kg/m3)

Workability:

Due to its high density, blunting impact on cutters, and occasionally interlocking grain, it can be difficult to deal with. During drying, the wood is prone to checking and splitting, and drying faults are typical. Turning is a breeze with this wood.
