Stringers, roof trusses, poles, joists, and piles are all popular uses for heart pine, as well as interior applications including subflooring and sheathing. It is frequently pressure-treated with preservatives for external applications.
Heart Pine belongs to the southern yellow pine family and has many traits with other members of the family (Slash, Shortleaf, and Loblolly Pine), such as being hard, thick, and having a high strength-to-weight ratio.
The sapwood is yellowish-white while the heartwood is reddish-brown.
